As a family with two dogs and a seven month old, we are constantly contaminated. It seems as though someone is always pooping, vomiting, or tracking in questionable things from the yard. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to clean up something gross, I’d be one rich woman! While washing my hands with warm water and gentle soap while singing Happy Birthday is my preferred way to decontaminate, sometimes we are on the go or in a hurry and I use a quick squirt of hand sanitizer.

I’ve never liked commercial hand sanitizers for three reasons.

  • They always leave my hands feeling super dry and crackly, no good!
  • I am concerned about the chemicals and additives that are in them. Questionable at best.
  • I worry that the intensity of these products increases the resistance of bacteria while killing all our good stuff too.

DIY Thieves Hand Sanitizer --->

So, in true beets and okra fashion I went out to discover how I could make a version of this that I would feel good about putting on my hands and on the hands of my little guy. I turned to my Young Living Essential Oils and my box of DIY products and went to work.

First, I knew immediately that this was a job for Thieves .

Thieves is a blend of five powerful oils: eucalyptus, rosemary, cinnamon, clove, and lemon. It has been shown to be anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic.  We apply thieves oil at the first sign ofsign up ---> andisigsbey.comsickness in our house and (knock on wood) none of us have had more than some stuffiness since we started using it. I believe it works and it has proven to be very beneficial to my family. There have been others that have found success using thieves and other essential oils to recover from staph and other serious infections. (You can find out more herehere, and here!)

Thieves was created from research about the four thieves in France who covered themselves with essential oils and herbs while robbing plague victims. Pretty interesting huh? BONUS: Thieves is also known to boost the immune system!

Okay, so obviously I believe in thieves and it is my go to ingredient for the following DIY thieves hand sanitizer.

DIY Hand Sanitizer

3 TBS good quality Aloe Vera

1.5 TBS of distilled water

1/4 TBS of grape seed oil (or another favorite carrier oil, I like grape seed because it is a light moisturizer)

7 drops of Thieves

Mix it all together in a glass jar. Apply a tiny squirt as needed and enjoy the benefits!

You can put it in one of those awesome silicone squeeze bottles for on-the-go sanitizing!

This recipe makes about 2.5 ounces.

If you are interested in trying thieves for yourself, it comes as part of the awesome Young Living Premium Starter Kit. I bought it and it was the best decision I made for me and my family!
